Jenifer Wightman
Everyday, humans flip fossil fueled switches. These invisible streams of electrons run our computers, escalators, elevators, fans and lights. If there is one ritual common among us all, it is energy use. Fossil fuels come primarily from solar energy captured by carboniferous and devonian era plants and animals. We are burning millions of years of fossilized sunlight in 300 years of industrialized society. You may request decal images of fossils for you to place on your own lighting fixtures. Ideally, you will agree to send me a photo of your mounted fossil decal. Examples of the fossils to be 'lit' are horse-tails, club mosses, scale trees, and ferns. More images to choose from are coming.
I am a research scientist specializing in greenhouse gas accounting and life cycle analysis for assessing sustainable bioenergy production systems. I began making science-based conceptual art in 2002. I live and work in Brooklyn, NY.
In general, I create science-based conceptual work. I like working with scientific graphics, living pigments, and language. I like process, rot, puns, metaphor, and the exponential function. I'm obsessed with the notion of infinite growth on a finite planet. My work explores the transition of biophysical states that co-evolve manifestations of culture and ecosystems.
