Inspired by the take away prints of Felix Gonzalez-Torres and instruction based work of Yoko Ono, pocket cloud is a uneditioned multiple that has been given to friends and adopters since 2007. The work is made using metallic film from a local recycling center with typewritten text. It is meant to be touched, held in your hand, and kept inside of your pocket. This edition for FAAN comes with instructions in a vellum envelope.

pocket cloud
artist: Audra Wolowiec

The artist, Audra Wolowiec, writes:

pocket cloud was adopted by Class 808, a group of very charming middle school boys attending M.S. 131 in New York City. They were each given one pocket cloud to care for (and customize) that were then featured in the exhibition 'Impermanent Collections' at Art in General in May 2009. They invited me to their classroom to give an artist talk and each wrote a beautiful letter in return. The initial adoption letter is below:

January 30, 2009

Dear Audra Wolowiec,

Class 808 is working on a curatorial studies class with Art in General.

We would like to adopt 'pocket cloud' because it is small and we can bring it anywhere. We also like 'pocket cloud' because it has a soft texture. It will fit in our pocket and feel comfortable. The 'pocket cloud' is blue like the sky. We think it will feel like we had a real cloud with us.

We will put 'pocket cloud' near the window in Art in General's Project Space. Because you can see the sky through the window, 'pocket cloud' will look like it is really in the sky.

Our class is 12 students of 7th and 8th grade boys. The school is located on Hester Street in Chinatown, New York City. We study Arts Integration with Art in General, Social Studies, and English Language Arts. Our homeroom teacher is Ms. Montgomery.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Class 808
